Coal Technologies Workshop
 
The Commission is hosting a workshop Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at the Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel for a workshop exploring the use of advanced coal technologies for meeting electricity needs in the West.
 
The workshop will cover:
  • Clean energy policy initiatives in the West, including policies in California, Oregon, and Washington and the Clean and Diversified Energy Initiative of the Western Governors’ Association

  • Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) technology - Stu Dalton of EPRI will present an overview of the three competing IGCC technologies, recent technical advances and industry R&D efforts. An industry speaker (to be announced) will cover project development, including early-stage performance issues. To close, Michael Degernes of Aberdeen Asset Management will give his perspective of the investment merits of IGCC technology.

  • CO2 capture and sequestration opportunities - Sally Benson of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will provide an overview of how sequestration works and geologic options. Dr. Susan Capalbo of Montana State University will discuss identification and demonstration of sequestration sites and implications for Western states. Finally, Charles Christopher of BP will present the mechanics and economics of sequestration based on the company’s project experience. Panelists also will cover monitoring and verification.
