Private and public groups partner to undertake project

The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB) has awarded $92,000 in Oregon Lottery funds to the Lakeview Soil and Water Conservation District to help improve habitat for native redband trout in an area along Willow Creek and to repair damaged streambanks.

Partners in the project include Ducks Unlimited, the landowner, Bureau of Land Management and the Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. Total project cost is about $203,000.

The project is located along Willow Creek, a tributary of the Chewaucan River. Due to heavy grazing over the years, vegetation along Willow Creek has been greatly reduced, causing streambank erosion and cutting a deeper creek channel. The resulting conditions have kept native redband trout from inhabiting this area of the Willow Creek.

This restoration and enhancement project will include planting trees and shrubs along the streambank as well as building fence to keep livestock away from the creek.

The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board consists of 17 members. Members represent the public at large, tribes, state natural resource agency boards and commissions, the Oregon State University Extension Service, and federal natural resource agencies. The board is supported by a state agency of the same name that provides grants and services to citizen groups, organizations and agencies working to restore healthy watersheds in Oregon. OWEB actions support the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds, created in 1997. Funding comes from the Oregon Lottery as a result of a citizen initiative in 1998, sales of salmon license plates, federal salmon funds and other sources. For more information, visit www.oregon.gov/OWEB or call OWEB in Salem at 503-986-0178.
