Private Burrell M. Baucom
Lost In The Line of Duty

Burrell M. Baucom, a young State Police Private, flagged a car to stop on Highway 99 seven miles north of Grants Pass.  The car had been reported stolen from Grants Pass.  A 17-year old "tough guy" who had just graduated from a reform school in California pulled out a gun and shot twice.  Private Baucom toppled to the roadway fatally wounded.  The killer and his 21 year-old companion sped away, wrecked their vehicle and attempted to run on foot, they were captured by a posse and sentenced to life imprisonment, both were paroled in 1947.
