Lost In The Line of Duty
Dan A. Nelson of Salem, appointed March 13th, 1972 was killed July 28th, 1972 at the age of 24. Officer Nelson was north of Salem on Interstate 5 issuing a warning to a motorist.
An elderly male subject veered across across the fog line and struck the officer. It was later determined that the accident was due to sleepiness on the part of the elderly male subject.
