A Cottage Grove-area man was arrested on cocaine-related charges Christmas Eve following an Oregon State Police traffic stop during a holiday enhanced patrol effort on Highway 38 in Douglas County. In addition to the cocaine, approximately $15,000 cash was also seized.
On December 24, 2007 at approximately 3:30 p.m. Oregon State Police Trooper Kris Davis stopped a 1998 Toyota RAV4 westbound on Highway 38 near milepost 20 for a speed violation. The operator and lone occupant of the vehicle was identified as JOHN THOMAS HARVICK, age 36, from Cottage Grove. During the stop, Trooper Davis was given consent to search the vehicle and found approximately 13 grams of cocaine and over $15,000 cash.
HARVICK was taken into custody and transported to the Reedsport City Jail then transferred to the Douglas County Jail where he was lodged for Unlawful Possession of Cocaine.
Trooper Davis, who is assigned to the Fish & Wildlife Division out of the Coos Bay Area Command office, was working speed grant enforcement overtime as part of the increased holiday patrol effort.
