Two Washington residents were arrested Thursday afternoon following a traffic stop that yielded approximately 21 pounds of marijuana on Interstate 5 between Medford and Ashland.

On December 13, 2007 at approximately 1:00 p.m. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers stopped a 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier displaying Washington license plates northbound Interstate 5 near milepost 18 for a safety belt violation. The two occupants were identified as driver CHRISTOPHER WATSON, age 24, from Lacy, Washington, and passenger ALTA MARIE SCHUFREIDER, age 22, from Newcastle, Washington.

An OSP drug detection canine present during the stop alerted to the exterior truck area of the car. Subsequent search discovered 19 individually packaged vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana concealed within camouflage duffel bags and backpacks inside the trunk. Estimated value of the marijuana is approximately $35,000.

WATSON and SCHUFREIDER were taken into custody and lodged in Jackson County Jail for Unlawful Possession, Distribution, and Manufacturing of a Controlled Substance Marijuana.
