District attorneys from Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties joined together to purchase the latest crash reconstruction equipment for the tri-county area to help investigate and fight crash-related deaths.
On December 14, 2007, District Attorney Gary Williams of Crook County, Michael Dugan of Deschutes County, and Peter Deuel of Jefferson County held a joint news conference in Redmond with Oregon State Police (OSP) and announced the purchase of two Sokkia total station crash reconstruction equipment. The three district attorney offices contributed a total of approximately $8,000 for the purchase.
"With this new equipment, the investigation of fatal vehicle crashes will be better, quicker and more certain to detect the cause and means of the crash," District Attorney Dugan said. "We hope the new equipment will help hold accountable those that cause death and serious injury on our highways."
The purchase of the new equipment is a reflection of the tri-county commitment to public safety services commented Jefferson County District Attorney Peter Deuel. "The units will enhance the capabilities to assist with investigation and reconstruction of other serious crimes in this area," said Deuel.
Crook County District Attorney Gary Williams noted the purchase was made partly possible by contributions from fines paid by citizens who have been convicted in court of alcohol offenses. "The entire community will benefit from this equipment because OSP is willing to assist other police agencies in their investigations with this technology, and it will help my office in the prosecution of serious crimes." Williams said.
Two Oregon State Police crash reconstructionists in the area will be using the equipment. Both troopers have extensive experience using the equipment to reconstruct major crime scenes and serious crashes.
"We are excited to receive this gracious donation made possible by the generous donations from the district attorneys," said OSP Sergeant Chris Seber. "OSP and the tri-county area law enforcement agencies will greatly benefit from the use of the equipment and expertise of the reconstructionists."
