Two California residents are being charged in Lake County, Oregon following a Monday afternoon traffic stop that yielded over 12 pounds of marijuana. The subsequent investigation by Oregon State Police (OSP) Drug Enforcement Section with Idaho State Police (ISP) led to arrests Tuesday of four people and seizure of approximately $28,000 cash in the Pocatello-area.
On April 9, 2007 at approximately 12:01 p.m. OSP Trooper Cliff Hargis stopped a 1986 Honda Accord with two occupants for a vehicle license violation northbound on Highway 395 just north of the Oregon / California border. Upon contact, the two occupants were identified as driver THOMAS ALLAN JONES, age 18, from Arcata, California, and passenger FORREST JEFFERSON BEEMAN, age 20, from Eureka, California.
During the traffic stop, Trooper Hargis detected a strong odor of marijuana. A search of the car led to the discovery of approximately 12 1/2 pounds of marijuana in large bags in the trunk. The marijuana has an estimated value of $40,000. In addition to the marijuana, over $1,300 cash was also seized.
Follow up investigation by an OSP Drug Enforcement Section detective led to Pocatello, Idaho. Working in cooperation with ISP, four people were taken into custody Tuesday and approximately $28,000 cash was seized.
Questions regarding the Idaho investigation should be directed to Idaho State Police.
JONES and BEEMAN are scheduled to appear in Lake County Circuit Court on charges of Manufacturing, Possession and Distribution of a Controlled Substance - Marijuana.
