About Ready to Read Grants
Ready to Read grant funds "are to be used to establish, develop or improve public library early literacy services for children from birth to five years of age and to provide the statewide summer reading program, as defined by rule of the Trustees of the State Library, for children from birth to 14 years of age."  This annual grant, funded by the General Fund of the State of Oregon, is administered by the Oregon State Library. All legally established public libraries in the state are eligible to apply for this non-competitive form of state aid.

Outstanding Projects
The State Library staff selects up to five projects each year to be honored as outstanding Ready to Read Grant projects.  In addition to selecting projects from a variety of library sizes and locations, we look for projects that meet one or more of the following criteria: adhere to the original intent of the Ready to Read Grant, focus on one or more of the three best practices, promote partnerships both in and out of the library, are replicable in other libraries, or enhance current library services.  Your Ready to Read project needs to meet one or more of these criteria to be considered for the Outstanding Project Award.

Best Practice Libraries
In 2007 the Oregon State Library identified three public library youth services best practices based on findings from the 2006 Statewide Early Literacy Initiative. The three best practices are: summer reading, outreach, and early literacy training for caregivers. The first annual Best Practice Libraries report was published in 2011 to acknowledge libraries that provide all three best practices. Libraries frequently change their programming to reflect community needs and library resources such as staffing and funding.  Therefore the Best Practice Libraries report will be published annually in conjunction with the Ready to Read Annual Report. Please visit the Youth Services Best Practices for Oregon Libraries web site to learn more.
