ATV Safety Instruction
There are two types of training available to Class I and Class III operators, on-line and hands-on.

On-line (required)
The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department ATV Safety Education Course is now online. This course provides safety tips for riding in Oregon's dunes, desert and forests as well as training on trail etiquette, riding ethics and environmental concerns.

The ATV Safety Education Course is the only way to receive the new ATV Safety Education Card (or Operator Permit) that is required for youth 15 and under and their adult supervisors. The ATV Safety Education Course will be phased in for all ages by 2014. Both the ATV Safety Education Course and the ATV Safety Education Card are free and never expire. Go to the ATV Safety website at www.rideATVoregon.org to find out when you will be required to have this training. Previous ASI or MSF Operator Permit holders will also need to take this course.

Hands-on

While hands-on training is highly recommended, it is not currently required and does not fulfill the ATV Safety Education Course and Card requirement above.

In 2012, hands-on training will become mandatory for youth 15 and under,  as well the online training. Those who have already received hands-on training via ASI or MSF will have already met this requirement and will be issued a new ATV Safety Education Card with their training endorsement. As we approach this deadline training may be hard to find,  so avoid the rush and get trained now.

ATV and Motorcycle Safety courses are available to help develop rider skills. For information about Motorcycle and ATV Safety Training courses check the Oregon State Parks website at www.oregonohv.org or contact the Derrick Lee ATV Safety Training Center in Tillamook at (503) 815-3376 or (503) 812-8614. Are you between the ages of 6 and 15?
Do you ride or want to ride ATVs?
Have you never taken an ASI or MSF Safety Class?

If you answered yes to these three questions, the ATV Program will pay $45 of the regular cost for you to take an authorized safety course.

You must possess a DOT approved helmet, goggles, boots, gloves, your own ATV and a willingness to learn about safe and responsible operation of ATVs or Dirtbikes. Arrangement may be able to be made if you don´t have an ATV or equipment.

If the student you are signing up is between 6 and 15, remember to inform the ASI call center operator that they are an Oregon resident and eligible for the subsidy provided by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

Quad (Class I) Training
Sign up for the ATV Ridercourse now!

The ATV Ridercourse is offered through the American Safety Institute (ASI).  You can also contact Oregon Instructors directly here. The ASI ATV Ridercourse is a 4 to 5 hour hands-on learning experience, with particular emphasis on the safety implications relating to each lesson.  The course also covers protective gear, environmental concerns, Oregon laws and safety techniques.  The training includes pre-ride inspections, starting and stopping, turning (gradual and quick), hills (stopping, u-turns, traversing), emergency stopping and swerving and riding over obstacles.

Motorcycle(Class III) Training
Motorcycle safety classes are offered through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF).  You can also contact Oregon coaches directly here.  The MSF Dirtbike school begins with the basics: sitting on the motorcycle, locating and operating the controls, straight-line riding.  As students progress, they learn how to ride in circles, make sharp turns and negotiate hills.  There are supplemental exercises for more experienced riders.  In addition to learning new skills, students also discuss responsible riding practices, including risk management and environmental awareness.  There is a section on Oregon laws as well.  At  the end of the day, students should have a solid understanding of the techniques an off-highway rider must use to stay safe, act responsibly and most important: have fun.
