Warning system for Emergencies
A warning system will alert residents living or working near the Depot if an emergency occurs. The system includes sirens that will broadcast emergency instructions within the Immediate Response Zone, and programmable highway message signs along major evacuation routes.

If there is a chemical accident at the Umatilla Army Depot, a natural disaster, or any type if emergency that would require you to evacuate or take shelter, county officials will set off outdoor warning sirens. 49 sirens have been installed in Boardman, Irrigon, Umatilla, Hermiston, Stanfield, and Echo. 7 sirens have also been installed at Umatilla Army Depot. When they go off in an emergency, the sirens will produce a high, continuous tone, similar to a fire station siren.

If you hear the siren warning tone, you should go indoors immediately and tune to one of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) radio stations listed below. Hermiston and Pendleton radio stations are a part of the EAS, and they will broadcast warnings and emergency public information. The local stations and their frequencies are listed below:

Local EAS Stations:
1090-AM, KLWJ-AM, Umatilla         *92.5-FM, KZHR-FM, Walla Walla
1240-AM, KTIX-AM, Pendleton         99.2-FM, KQFM-FM, Hermiston
1290-AM, KUMA-AM, Pendleton     103.4-FM, KWHT-FM, Pendleton
1360-AM, KOHU-AM, Hermiston     107.7-FM, KUMA-FM, Pendleton
* Spanish-speaking station

The Emergency Alert System messages will tell you if the area you live or work in could be affected by the emergency. The messages will describe emergency zones and sectors. These are areas officials believe will be affected by the emergency.

The network of warning sirens will be tested periodically. You will know it´s just a test because the sirens will sound a different tone. The test tone is Westminster Chimes, the tune that Big Ben plays in London, England. This tone is a series of bell chimes.

Officials will warn motorists of emergencies or road hazards by turning on eight highway reader boards. The electronic reader boards will display messages telling drivers to turn around or to use caution while driving on hazardous stretches of the road.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Depending on where you are, you will be instructed to shelter, evacuate, or do nothing.
