Cosmetology applicants once had to travel to Salem to take the written examination. Now they can take the exam at any of the 14 LaserGrade testing centers in Oregon and in California, Idaho and Washington border cities.
Taking the exam at one of LaserGrade’s 14 Oregon-area centers costs more, but savings in time and travel costs (including avoiding icy mountain passes, etc.) may outweigh the difference for many applicants. The cost for each field of practice examination is $55 at LaserGrade (Oregon Laws & Rules is $35), compared to $25 per category if the exam is taken at the Oregon Health Licensing Agency (OHLA) in Salem.
The difference in fees reflects the amount LaserGrade retains on each examination. Applicants will have to determine if the convenience and estimated savings in time and travel costs outweigh the higher cost of the LaserGrade examination.
For example, if you tested for two fields of practice and the Oregon Laws & Rules (required) at OHLA in Salem, you would pay $75. At LaserGrade, you would pay $145. But if you live in remote part of eastern Oregon, don’t drive a car with great gas mileage, or have to stay in a hotel, you might save money by going to LaserGrade.
LaserGrade currently has testing centers in the following cities in Oregon:
- Aurora
- Corvallis
- Creswell
- Hillsboro
- McMinnville
- Redmond
- Salem
Border cities in neighboring states that may be closer than Salem for some applicants include Eureka and Redding, California; Boise and Caldwell, Idaho; and Longview, Pasco and Yakima, Washington.
The Oregon Health Licensing Agency (OHLA) will continue to offer the written examination in Salem on a walk-in basis.
Applicants taking the exam at a LaserGrade center still need to submit the required school transcripts (directly from the school), application, application fee and certificate fee(s) to OHLA prior to sitting for the exam. The exam can be taken only after the student’s last day of attendance at a licensed cosmetology school.
