Registration Required for State’s Athletic Trainers Salem, OR, October 11, 2004—Oregon Athletic Trainers who haven’t registered with the state of Oregon may face what every athlete tries to avoid: penalties. Athletic Trainers must be registered with the Oregon Health Licensing Agency and follow professional standards set by the Oregon Board of Athletic Trainers. The penalty can be steep for not registering—up to $5,000 for providing athletic training services without a valid registration. State registration is required and is separate from certification with the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC). “We know the crucial role Athletic Trainers play in preventing and responding to athletic injuries as an integral member of the athletic health care team,” says Ben Rodriguez, Chief Enforcement Officer of the Oregon Health Licensing Agency. “That’s why it’s important they have the training and experience that registration requires.” Statutory language was corrected and passed into law by the 2003 Oregon Legislative Assembly allowing the Oregon Health Licensing Agency to enforce required registration. The agency is planning school visits statewide by agency enforcement staff. There are currently 162 registered Athletic Trainers in Oregon. Athletic Trainers must complete at least a bachelor’s degree and receive a passing score on the NATABOC examination to qualify for registration. The Oregon Health Licensing Agency is an independent state consumer protection agency providing regulatory oversight to multiple health and related professions. The Board of Athletic Trainers is one of eight volunteer citizens’ boards and councils under the agency’s administration.
