New Youngs Bay Bridge

Project Purpose
During the Fall of 2007 a two-year project will begin to upgrade the New Young’s Bay Bridge.  This $8 million project will address structural modernization, replacement of the lift-span control panel, computer monitoring system and electrical systems as well as safety barriers and traffic gates; some of which are over 40-years old.  The Bridge will also receive a fresh coat of paint.

Construction Impact
Work will take place during day-time and nighttime hours.  Lane closures on the bridge will be limited to evening and early morning hours.

Motorists can expect minor traffic impacts.  To avoid some of the congestion, motorists may consider using U.S. 101 Business Route to cross Young’s Bay.

Marine Traffic will be affected for approximately four weeks during the time the gears are replaced.  Typical highway construction projects provide room for equipment and workers to safely work on one travel lane at a time by closing one lane of traffic.  Since ODOT is unable to close down a lane on the Bridge for equipment and workers, barges will be anchored to the Bridge providing a work platform during the in-water work period from November-February.

Intermittent restrictions will be placed on pedestrian and bicycle movement.  The suggested detour route for bicycles and pedestrians is to us U.S. 101 Business Route.
