Newberg Willamette River Bridge inspection
02/12/2008
Through Thursday, Feb 14, one lane may be closed
NEWBERG – Inspectors from the Oregon Department of Transportation will use a snooper crane to install strain gages and a data collection system on the WillametteRiverBridgein Newberg, Feb. 12 through 14.  Use of the crane may require a lane closure from 9 a.m.until 3 p.m.  Traffic will be controlled by flaggers, and drivers can expect minor delays.

Inspectors will be installing strain gages and a data collection system.  The results of this testing will tell ODOT how often ultrasonic testing on pin/hanger assemblies are needed. Because the assemblies used to connect the steel girders on the NewbergWillametteRiverBridgeare considered fracture critical, they are scheduled for regular inspection every two years.

According to ODOT Senior Mechanical Engineer Steve Lovejoy, “This is routine work for this type of bridge. There are four bridges around the state that use this type of assembly, and all of them are inspected biennially.”
