| Motorcycle Instruction Permit |
|
A motorcycle instruction permit authorizes you to operate any motorcycle during daylight hours when you are under the supervision of a person who:
- Is at least 21 years of age;
- Has a valid license with a motorcycle endorsement;
- Is riding a separate motorcycle; and
- Is in visual contact with you.
Note: It is unlawful to carry a passenger if you are operating a motorcycle using a motorcycle instruction permit.
Qualify/Apply
You must apply in person at a DMV office, and you must:
Note: There is no fee for the motorcycle knowledge or skills test. Expiration/Renewal
A motorcycle instruction permit is valid for one year from the date of issuance. A motorcycle instruction permit may be renewed. Renewing the motorcycle instruction permit does not extend the validity of the current permit. If you renew prior to the expiration date of the current permit, it will be valid for one year from the issuance date. If your permit has been expired for more than one year you will be required to successfully complete the knowledge and vision tests and pay all applicable fees.

| Motorcycle Endorsement |
|
A motorcycle endorsement authorizes the operation of any size motorcycle.
Qualify/Apply
You must apply in person at a DMV office, and you must:
- Be an Oregon resident of or domiciled in Oregon;
- Be at least 16 years of age;
- Have a valid Oregon driver license (class C or higher);
- Have no suspended, canceled, revoked, or otherwise withdrawn driving privileges in Oregon or any other state;
- Submit a completed Driver License/ID Card Application;
- Have no medical condition that makes you unable to drive safely. If you answer “yes” to any of the medical questions on the application, as outlined in OAR 735-062-0007 (2)(a)(b)(c), DMV will not issue you driving privileges until you have established that your condition does not affect your ability to drive safely. DMV may ask you to provide additional medical information and/or require that you pass additional DMV tests;
- If under 18, obtain your biological or adoptive parent or legal guardian's signature on your application, unless you are married or an emancipated minor;
- Provide proof of your full legal name;
- Provide proof of your legal presence in the U.S., identity and date of birth;
- Provide proof of your Social Security Number (SSN);
- Provide proof of your Oregon residence address;
- If under 21, complete a TEAM OREGON Basic Rider Training (BRT) Course:
- A BRT course completion card, dated within the last 2 years, waives both the motorcycle knowledge test and the on-cycle skills test;
- If over 21, pass a motorcycle knowledge test and pass an on-cycle skills test (be sure to bring proof of insurance to your test). Note: If you have a valid, motorcycle-endorsed license issued by a U.S. State, you may not be required to take the on-cycle skills test. You may also waive tests by successfully completing qualifying TEAM OREGON courses:
- Pass a vision screening test as defined in OAR 735-062-0050; and
- Pay the applicable issuance fees.
Note: There is no fee for the motorcycle knowledge or skills tests.

Motorcycles Make Sense - So Does Professional Training
They are inexpensive to operate, fun to ride and easy to park. Unfortunately, many riders never learn the critical skills needed to ride safely.
Professional training for beginning and experienced riders prepares them for real-world traffic situations. Motorcycle Rider Courses teach and improve skills such as:
- Effective turning;
- Braking maneuvers;
- Protective apparel selection;
- Obstacle avoidance;
- Traffic strategies; and
- Maintenance.
