Driver license requirements to establish identity and legal presence in the U.S.
Sample driver license image
Two recent law changes, operative July 1, 2008, dictate many changes in the requirements for a driver license, driver permit or identification card. A person applying for issuance, renewal or replacement must provide proof of a verifiable Social Security number (or ineligibility for a Social Security number) and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence in the U.S.
A person must also submit to the collection of biometric data (a photograph) for the purpose of establishing the person's identity.
