Two new appointments and the reappointment of two current commissioners will ensure a strong team through the 2009 legislative session

SALEM — Governor Ted Kulongoski today appointed Alan Brown of Newport and David Lohman of Medford to the Oregon Transportation Commission. In addition, the Governor announced that he is reappointing Chair Gail Achterman and Commissioner Janice Wilson. The Commission provides oversight to the Oregon Department of Transportation and oversees the implementation of Oregon’s transportation policies and investments.

“Both Alan and David bring a wealth of valuable experience to the Oregon Transportation Commission,” said Governor Kulongoski. “I will count on their leadership as we all work together to develop a long term, statewide transportation funding package to be brought to the 2009 legislature.”

Alan Brown recently served as a state representative for three terms in the Oregon legislature representing Lincoln County, and chaired the House Transportation Committee in 2003. He also spent 14 years working for the Oregon State Highway Department. He served as a Port of Newport commissioner from 1992 to 2001, and was a member of the Newport City Council from 1988 to 1992.

David Lohman, an attorney in Medford, served as director of the Port of Portland’s Policy and Planning Department from 1992 to 2003, and was the Port’s delegate to Metro’s Joint Policy Committee on Transportation. He also served on the Bi-State Transportation Committee and on the first Interstate 5 Bridge Task Force. In addition, Lohman served as deputy director of the Oregon Economic Development Department from 1987 to 1991. Both Brown and Lohman bring geographic diversity to the commission.

With the reappointments of Gail Achterman, who is the first woman to serve as chair, and Janice Wilson, the Oregon Transportation Commission will be comprised of the same five members through the duration of the 2009 legislative session. Vice-Chair Mike Nelson's term will not expire until 2011.

“By adding Dave and Alan to the current commission and ensuring that we preserve the talent that is already there, I am confident that the team in place can help me deliver an ambitious transportation package in 2009,” said Gov. Kulongoski.

The governor appoints five commissioners, ensuring that different geographic regions of the state are represented. One member must live east of the Cascade Range; no more than three can belong to one political party. The Oregon Transportation Commission is charged with establishing state transportation policy. The commission meets monthly to oversee ODOT activities relating to highways, public transportation, rail, transportation safety, motor carrier transportation, and drivers and motor vehicles.
