Revenue from timber harvests is distributed to either the counties or to the Common School Fund, depending on the type of state forestland. See history for an explanation of the types of these lands.

1) Two-thirds of timber revenues generated from these state forestlands is allocated to counties according to harvest location. Counties in turn pass some revenue to school and local taxing districts. Applies to 15 counties that deeded lands to the state in the mid-1900s (these “Board of Forestry Lands” are primarily in northwest Oregon, including Tillamook, Clatsop and Santiam state forests). There are approximately 657,000 acres of these types of state forestlands.
2) The federal government deeded these Common School Lands, owned by the State Land Board, to Oregon at statehood. ODF manages the lands under contract, and revenues go to the Common School Fund, which help fund K-12 education statewide. There are approximately 124,000 acres of these forestlands – including 93,000 acres of the Elliott State Forest southeast of Reedsport.
