The OSU Forestry Extension Program conducts educational programs for forest landowners, and publishes newsletters and forest-related publications for woodland owners.

Contact your county OSU Extension office for a calendar of educational programs and tours, a catalog of forest-related publications, and to be placed on their newsletter mailing list.

Oregon Forest Resources Institute
The Oregon Legislature created the Oregon Forest Resources Institute (OFRI) in 1991 to improve public understanding of the state’s forest resources and to encourage environmentally sound forest management through training and other educational programs for forest landowners. OFRI is funded by a dedicated harvest tax on forest products producers.

International Society of Arboriculture
Educational modules to help you learn what it takes to keep the  trees in your yard healthy, safe, and beautiful, and prevent them from becoming hazardous can be found on the Hazard Tree Prevention website (PNW Chapter, International Society of Arboriculture).

Other States
Educational publications and videos for forest owners are available from neighboring states (many are equally useful to Oregon forest owners).

Financial Incentives
The Private Forests Program administers state and federal dollars that are used to reimburse private landowners for qualified projects that help improve or protect forest resources. Funds may be allocated to address soil erosion, water quality, fish and wildlife enhancement, insect and disease problems, the build-up of forest fuels that increase the risk of catastrophic wildfires, and other threats to Oregon’s forests.

Financial incentive program summaries, eligibility requirements and application forms are available here.

Forestry Consultants
Private forest consultants are available throughout the state to provide comprehensive assistance to landowners. Consultants provide many valuable services that are beyond the scope of public agency assistance programs. Many landowners find the services of a consultant to be especially valuable during the complex process of selling and harvesting timber. Consultants also can help landowners develop Forest Stewardship Plans

Oregon Department of Forestry
Small woodland owners can request on-site assistance from their local ODF stewardship forester, who can provide information and guidance on insect and disease issues, reforestation and young growth management, financial incentives, and other forest related topics and resources.

Management plans are a recommended first step in any small woodland project, and may be written by the landowner or by natural resource professionals. Funds are available to assist you in creating a management plan for your property. If you have a minimum of 10 acres, ODF may be able to provide cost-share funds  so you can hire a professional forester or other professional to help you develop a forest stewardship management plan. Your local OSU extension office can also assist you with developing such a plan.
