Overview of the Oregon Forestland-Urban Interface Fire Protection Act in Josephine County
Implementation of the Oregon Forestland-Urban Interface Fire Protection Act in Josephine County began in April 2006. In general, forestland-urban interface lands will need the following fuel reduction treatment, according to a forestland-urban interface area's fire-risk classification:
  • Lots located in forestland-urban interface areas classified "Moderate" are required to have a 30-foot fuel break around the structure
  • Lots located in forestland-urban interface areas classified "High" are required to have a 30-50 foot fuel break around the structure; the larger fuel break is required around structures with a wood shake roof
  • Lots located in forestland-urban interface areas classified "Extreme" are required to have a 50-100 foot fuel break around the structure
  • No treatment is required on lots without a structure

Overview of the Oregon Forestland-Urban Interface Fire Protection Act in Jackson County
The owners of 9,000 lots in Jackson County received notices in 2005 from the Oregon Department of Forestry that they must make their homes and properties less vulnerable to wildland fire. Property owners have had two years in which to complete fuel reduction projects and return a signed self-certification card to ODF.

In most cases, property owners need to establish 30-100 foot fuel breaks around structures, prune lower branches from trees, and prune or thin vegetation along driveways to improve fire truck access. The fuel-reduction measures are described in materials that accompany the ODF notices.

The fuel reduction standards do not apply to unimproved lots.
