 Storm Damage 2007 Salvage Information
The Oregon Department of Forestry's Astoria District have Stewardship Foresters to assist landowners in Clatsop County.  Their role is to provide landowners with information and education of forestry issues: tree assessment, lists of  local loggers and arborists, protection of resources through education and implementation the Forest Practices Act.

If a landowner has only a few trees, then hiring an arborist or lawn care service may be the best option. Cutting the trees for personal use firewood is another option. This type of work does not require a notification form from ODF.  Reforestation is not required in yard areas around homes. A list of local arborists and tree care service companies is available from ODF.

If  you intend to sell firewood commercially, then a Notification of Operation form is required by ODF.

If you have enough timber down or leaning to make logs, then hiring a logger may be the better option.  ODF has a list of local operators that normally work on smaller operations.  This type of operation does require either the landowner or operator to submit a Notification of Operation form to ODF.  A stewardship forester may contact either the landowner or operator for an on site pre-operation meeting.  Stewardship foresters are available to talk to landowners beforehand to help them decide which option is best.

ODF does not get involved in the financial side of the operation.  This is strictly between the landowner and operator.  ODF does recommend that landowners ask for and check references and have a written contract agreed upon prior to the start of the operation.  Make sure that any site specific clean up work beyond logging is agreed upon.  Some times operators will do additional slash piling for an hourly rate.

Consulting foresters can provide landowners services such as estimating the amount of merchantable timber, finding an operator/logger, marketing the timber to the mill, and clean-up.  ODF has a list of  local consulting foresters.

Reforestation will be required if the harvest area meets the threshold.  Stewardship foresters will inform landowners when reforestation is required.  Reforestation is the landowner's responsibility.   Sources for seedlings are available from ODF.
