Gypsy Moth Detection Program Update #2
10/03/2007

Gypsy Moth Detection Program Update:
Through October 1, 2007

Total number of gypsy moths trapped: 11

Location:

Shady Cove, Jackson County (6 moths)
Eugene, Lane County (2 moths)
Murphy, Josephine County (1 moth)
Wasco, Sherman County (1 moth)
Sunriver, Deschutes County (1 moth)

New catches since last report: 2

Eugene, Lane County (1 moth)
Sunriver, Deschutes County (1 moth)

Status: The Oregon Department of Agriculture continues checking as it removes approximately 18,000 gypsy moth traps placed statewide earlier this year. Two new detections are reported for 2007 bringing the total number of gypsy moths trapped this year to 11.

A new single detection of gypsy moth has been made on a golf course south of Sunriver in Deschutes County. The latest trapping is not related to last year's detection of 57 gypsy moths in Bend at a site more than 20 miles to the north.

A second detection has been made in a residential area of southeast Eugene after additional traps were placed following the first detection earlier this summer.

No new detections have been made in the rural community of Murphy, south of Grants Pass in Josephine County, and in the town of Wasco in Sherman County. Both sites had single detections earlier this summer.

There has been no change in Shady Cove, north of Medford in Jackson County, where six gypsy moths were trapped earlier this summer. All six moths were found in a single trap located near the Rogue River. Shady Cove also reported gypsy moth detections in 2005 and 2006.

There have been no detections of gypsy moth in Bend or St. Helens- both locations where eradication projects were held this spring.

Early detection and eradication of gypsy moth infestations are goals of the Oregon Department of Agriculture to prevent economic and environmental losses to Oregon, either by restrictive quarantines on commodities or by the loss of foliage and even trees due to expanding gypsy moth populations.

Traps will continue to be removed over the next couple of weeks. We will issue updates as new information becomes available.
