Carbon Footprint

Transportation emissions, mostly from cars and trucks, account for 38 percent of Oregon's carbon dioxide emissions, according to the Oregon Governor's Advisory Group on Global Warming (see p. 30).  CO2 emissions are a major greenhouse gas.

By making it easier for people to take short trips by foot or bicycle -- and longer trips by public transit -- state and local governments can help communities reduce CO2 emissions.  Listed below are publications that discuss the role of land use and community design in reducing greenhouse gases.
