Commercial Wind Power
Large commercial wind turbines range from 500 kilowatts to over a thousand kilowatts (a megawatt) of power capacity each. For example, the Stateline Wind Project in northeastern Oregon consists of 126 turbines erected on 165-foot towers. Each blade is about 77 feet in length. Each turbine has a generating capacity of 660 kilowatts.
Most wind commercial production turbines are designed to use wind blowing from 9 to 65 mph. However, because wind speed varies, the annual power production is typically about one-third of the full turbine generating capacity. For this reason, good site selection and turbine choice are critical to a commercial wind projects success.
Site Certificates
Commercial wind energy projects that have the capacity to generate more than 105 megawatts must have an energy facility site certificate before beginning construction. The Energy Facility Siting Council administers siting new energy generation facilities of this size in Oregon.
