Oregon Employment Department
State extension of unemployment benefits to take effect in October
Oregon Emergency Benefits passed by 2009 Legislature

Salem – Thousands of Oregonians whose unemployment insurance benefits will run out this fall may have some relief from the Oregon Legislature.

House Bill 3483 established the Oregon Emergency Benefits (OEB) Program.  OEB provides 13 additional weeks of unemployment benefits for people who have exhausted all other benefit programs.  The OEB program will go into effect the week beginning October 4, 2009.  An estimated 6,000 Oregonians may be eligible for the OEB program.

Potentially eligible claimants will receive a notification from the Employment Department by mail. To be eligible for Oregon Emergency Benefits (OEB), an individual must be unemployed and not eligible for any other benefits.

Oregonians out of work through no fault of their own are eligible for an initial unemployment claim of up to 26 payments.  Since July, 2008 a series of benefit extension programs have been enacted as Oregon’s economy has struggled.  Below is a breakdown of current unemployment benefit programs:

Regular Unemployment (State paid) : Up to 26 weeks
Emergency Unemployment Compensation (Federally paid): Up to 33 weeks
High Extended Benefits (Federally paid): Up to 20 weeks
Oregon Emergency Benefits (State paid, beginning October 4, 2009): Up to 13 weeks
