Award Nomination Tips
Read award criteria thoroughly and highlight important information. Follow all
guidelines; it is important to avoid disqualification. Nominations that are disqualified
do not comply with the criteria, they are late, do not have the right number of copies,
do not specify the award being sought, etc. It may take judges up to ten hours to
review entries, so make your presentation stand out and fun to read.

  • Timing/deadline - make sure your entry covers the time period and is submitted on time
  • What does your council do that is out of the norm?
  • What does your local group put back into the community? Impact on community?
  • Development of the upcoming workforce? Scholarship, school-to-work?
  • What does your group do beyond employment? (Walk for Life, United Way, etc.)
  • Use original photos in all entries
  • Cover page complete and accurate
  • Summary – why is this an award winning council/person/organization?
  • Dates of the award period
  • Make it easy and interesting for judges to read, but keep in mind content is more important than presentation
  • Exhibits and attachments – clearly marked
  • Don’t add filler
  • Show diversity of group
  • Substance
  • Take time to think it through
  • Don’t get carried away with exhibits
  • Keep an activity file throughout the year…don’t try to pull it all together at the last minute
  • Be sure to respond to all criteria
  • Use correct English
  • Respond fully to each question
  • Avoid jargon, abbreviations, acronyms
  • Don’t ramble on
  • Have an outsider review your entry and have them use the scoring sheet
  • Use voices – testimonials from employers, partners and staff
