WorkSource Oregon Employment Department began recruiting to fill temporary positions with the Oregon State Fair on Thursday, but the turnout of job applicants has been less than anticipated.

According to Employment Department staff, anywhere from 300 to 400 individuals are usually referred to jobs on the first day, this year there were slightly more than 200.  The following morning, only 28 hopefuls showed up to apply for State Fair Jobs.

The State Fair is only three weeks away and with 1,400 positions that need to be filled, the need is urgent.

“There certainly is a chance that things could pick up next week,”  said Susan Ridgway of WorkSource Oregon Employment Department.  “However, history has shown after the first few days the number of applicants drops significantly.”

WorkSource Oregon Employment Department operates a temporary office located in a trailer in the Oak Grove, which is on the west side of 17th street across from the green gate.

Ridgway said workers are needed to assist in the food concession areas, the carnival, exhibitor booths, and more.

The trailer is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6p.m.

To help expedite job placement, applicants are encouraged to register in iMatchSkills prior to visiting the WorkSource Oregon Employment Department trailer.  Applicants may register in iMatchSkills online at WorkingInOregon.org, or at their local WorkSource Oregon Employment Department office.  All applicants seeking State Fair jobs must be registered in iMatchSkills, so registering before coming to the WorkSource Oregon Employment Department trailer will save time.

Jobs are available for applicants ages 16 and up, and a work permit is not required.
