Businesses and individuals now have a single point of contact from which to gather information about independent contractors.
State agencies have launched a Web site, www.OregonIndependentContrators.com, that outlines the Oregon independent contractor law, provides answers to frequently asked questions, and connects businesses and workers with all the state agencies that deal with independent contractor information.
Rules and laws about independent contractors fall under several state agencies and the Internal Revenue Service. There are differences in the independent contractor law as it is enforced by various Oregon state agencies. Recognizing how confusing it was for businesses and individuals to locate and understand these laws, Gov. Ted Kulongoski ordered state agencies to create a single resource for independent contractor information.
“It is very important for businesses and individuals to have accurate information about independent contractors,” said Renee Bryant, manager of the Unemployment Insurance Tax Section of the Oregon Employment Department. “When there are problems, often it is because parties thought they were operating as independent contractors and they weren’t. This Web site is an effort to help businesses and individuals avoid those situations by giving them the information they need in a convenient and easy-to-use format.”
Six state agencies combined efforts to create the Web site. Those agencies are: WorkSource Oregon Employment Department, The Department of Revenue, the Bureau of Labor and Industries, The Workers Compensation Division, Constructor Contractors Board, and Landscape Contractors Board
