Oregon Employment Department
Bill passes offering extension of unemployment benefits
04/20/2005
Some Oregonians who have run out of unemployment insurance benefits will be able to file for an extension with the passage of HB 3305.  The bill affects those individuals who exhausted regular Oregon benefits on or after the week ending December 4, 2004.  Claimants who qualify will be eligible for 25% of their regular claim, or 6 1/2 weeks in most cases.

Following the governor’s signature, the Oregon Employment Department will begin notifying all potential claimants the week of April 24 by mail.  The department estimates approximately 17,000 Oregonians will receive these letters.

The program is set to go into effect May 1 and will run through August 13, 2005.

Through the height of the state’s job recession In 2002 and 2003, the Employment Department managed seven different unemployment extension programs. However, Oregon has been without an extension of unemployment benefits since the Oregon Additional Benefits program ended in April, 2004.

Any individuals who feel they may be eligible for the extension program, and do not receive a letter from the Employment Department by May 1, may contact their local Unemployment Insurance Center.
