Seeking the treasures of South Slough forms the theme for the on-site visit. After a hike to the shoreline of the estuary, your students will embark on an adventure along the "Treasure Trails", "cracking" clues which ultimately lead to the treasure. Along the trail, they are magically transformed into raccoons to discover how these animals use both the forests and the estuary’s shores for their survival; they help prepare the rich broth of "Estuary Soup", the food of many estuary animals; they investigate the "gardens" of the estuary; and, they learn through problem solving that many migratory animals visit and depend on South Slough. By the end of the day, the students have learned enough to actually find the treasure. It is, of course, the reserve itself. South Slough is a treasure to all things that live there and pass through!
