Low-income taxpayers can get tax help Saturdays at Salem Library

SALEM—Free help is now available through April 12 for taxpayers who need assistance preparing their 2007 income tax returns.

Representatives from Oregon Department of Revenue will staff the Tax-Aide site at the Salem Public Library. They will help prepare basic state and federal income tax returns for low-income taxpayers. The program’s representatives have experience in federal and state tax law.

Returns with business income, rental income, or capital gains do not qualify for this free tax service.

Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty St., NE—10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays, February 2 – April 12, except February 23 and March 22.

You must bring:
•    valid photo identification (passport, driver’s license, U.S. government-issued photo ID card);
•    all W-2s and 1099 forms;
•    Social Security cards and/or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) cards for yourself and all your dependents;
•    a copy of your 2006 tax return, if you filed; and
•    receipts for any deductions or credits you are claiming.

No appointment is necessary.

There will be no Tax-Aide site at the Oregon Department of Revenue headquarters.
