Santiam Correctional Institution Evacuated
At approximately 10:38 a.m., Thursday February 14, 2008, Santiam Correctional Institution was evacuated to the recreation yard, which is a secure area, of all inmates and staff as a precaution due to a chemical smell. The Salem Fire Department was immediately called and is currently inside the building assessing the situation.
As a precaution, three staff members have been transported to the local hospital. No inmates have been transferred at this time.
The institution is expected to be back to routine operations within a few hours.
