Inmate Walks Away from Work Crew
Shortly before 9:30 this morning, inmate Charles Covey walked away from his 8-man minimum-custody work crew in Portland. The crew from Columbia River Correctional Institution in north Portland was performing litter pick-up work on NE Airport Way between I-205 and Portland International Airport.
Covey, 30, is a white male with blond hair and blue eyes. He is 5'10" tall and weighs 170 lbs. He was last seen wearing Prison Blues® jeans, a blue T-shirt, and a blue denim jacket. All articles of clothing had the word "inmate" prominently stenciled on them in orange. He has several tatooes on his left arm, including "MS," "Ozzy" and "F*** Off" (expletive). On his right arm, there is a skull with wings, "heaven + hell" and a faded cross is on his left hand. There is a tattoo of a snake on his back and a skull on his chest.
Covey was incarcerated in April 1997. He completed a 70-month prison term for Kidnapping 2 in September 2002 and was serving a consecutive 70-month sentence for Robbery 2 stemming from the same Multnomah County case. His release date had been in July 2008. Preliminary information suggests that he has ties to Portland, Keizer and northern Idaho.
Only minimum custody inmates within three years of release are eligible to join outside work crews. Columbia River Correctional Institution has 537 levels 1 and 2 inmates (minimum custody), most of whom participate in work and/or treatment programs.
As with all fugitives, Covey should be considered dangerous and not be approached. Anyone with information regarding his wherabouts should contact the Oregon State Police at 1-800-452-7888, the non-emergency number of their local police department, or the Oregon Department of Corrections Fugitive Apprehension Unit at 503-945-0975.
