Inmate Commits Suicide at Oregon State Correctional Institution

During a routine tier check shortly before midnight Wednesday, May 9, 2007, Inmate Jeremy Ayala, 24, was found hanging in a single-person cell in the Disciplinary Segregation Unit at Oregon State Correctional Institution in Salem.

Prison security and medical staff as well as emergency responders attempted to resuscitate Ayala, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Ayala was transported to Salem Hospital by ambulance and was pronounced dead at 12:41 this morning.

Inmate Ayala was serving a 15-month sentence for Felon in Possession of a Weapon out of Hood River County. He was concurrently on post-prison supervision for Burglary I, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, and Theft I. He was most recently admitted to prison in August 2006 and was scheduled to be released on August 22, 2007.

OSCI is an 895-bed medium-security men's prison.

As with all unanticipated deaths of state prisoners, the Oregon State Police are investigating.
