Douglas Co. Community Corrections Adds Drug Detection Dog

Douglas County Community Corrections recently added a new asset to its office, a  German Shepherd named Gunter.

“Gunter recently completed training and certification in narcotics detection,” explained his handler, Parole and Probation Officer Chris Hooley. “Gunter has quite a nose for locating meth, marijuana, cocaine and heroin.”

Jason Coutts, president and owner of Jaymar Kennels in North Bend, Ore., donated the 18-month old purebred German Shepherd to the Department of Corrections. “Mr. Coutts’ generous donation made it possible for us to initiate this local narcotics detection program,” said Mark Cadotte, director of Douglas County Community Corrections. “Several community donations also helped to offset the cost of supplies for the program.”

“Unfortunately, Douglas County has its share of people involved in the use and distribution of narcotics,” added Cadotte. “The Canine Narcotics Detection Team is one of many tools that we use to combat the use of drugs in our communities. Our intent is to make the team available to our law enforcement partner agencies to assist in narcotics searches.

“We also plan to offer demonstrations to our schools and civic organizations,” he concluded.
