Between 800 and 1000 inmates were on the recreation yard at Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday evening when several fights broke out among about 100 of the inmates. Multiple warning shots were fired from the towers, bringing the disturbance to an end.

As a precaution, an emergency count of inmates was conducted and cleared, and the institution was placed on lock down.
The penitentiary's superintendent, Joan Palmateer, called off duty officers in to work to enhance staffing as long as necessary. Oregon State Police and the penitentiary's intelligence officers are investigating.
