FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 6, 2000
At 9:30 a.m., Clackamas County dispatch received a telephone call regarding a possible bomb threat at Oregon State Penitentiary.
Security precautions were immediately put into effect by penitentiary staff.
As a precaution, the penitentiary cancelled visits with inmates. The Oregon State Police restricted traffic to the prison. The prison's daily routine, including inmate work programs, was otherwise uninterrupted.
"We have a responsibility to the public, staff and inmates to take all such threats seriously," said Oregon State Penitentiary Superintendent Joan Palmateer. "We deployed some staff in strategic places as a precaution, but with the cooperation of the State Police, we were able to minimize disruptions while ensuring that people would remain safe."
The prison resumed normal operations mid-afternoon Wednesday.
Oregon State Police detectives located the person believed to have made the threat. After contacting the individual, the police determined that he does not pose an ongoing threat to the prison. No charges are anticipated and the State Police have concluded their investigation.
