Oregon State Senator David Nelson, right, recently toured Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Umatilla with the prison’s superintendent, Bob Schiedler. The new state prison is due to open in February, 2000, and house over 1600 inmates. Senator Nelson, who was accompanied by his wife and legislative assistant Alice, expressed particular interest in the areas designed for inmate work programs. As they doffed their hard hats, dusted off their shoes and dashed for another engagement, the senator pledged his continued interest in the facility and the programs it will provide to return inmates to society as productive citizens.
