Private Prison
In the late 1800´s the Oregon State Penitentiary was leased to a private company. The private company was responsible for the maintenance of the institution, care of the inmates and maintaining the security of the institution. The company´s objective was to use the inmates for low-cost labor in order to increase profits. Since this concept was becoming very popular nationwide, Oregon´s legislature approved the experiment.

The experiment was soon terminated. Why? In one day every inmate at the penitentiary escaped. Most walked out the front gate!
