Who: Families and members from various representatives for our respite partnerships who represent the families, providers, state and local agencies, faith communities, health services, academic institutions, non-profit organizations, etc...
Why: An opportunity for community partners around the State to increase awareness of the Oregon Lifespan Respite Care program, and bring a renewed and continuing commitment to respite care services for families across Oregon. Participants will have a better understanding of the barriers for local Lifespan Respite Care Networks, and participate in the development of a more comprehensive plan for enhancing the program. Participants will also learn about the Federal Lifespan Respite Law, and develop a plan to prepare for this new funding.
Background: Research has shown that family and primary caregivers who take a break from their constantly demanding role caring for children and adults with special needs not only stay healthier, but are also able to prevent early institutionalization of their loved ones. For those and many other research-based benefits, Oregon pioneered the nation in establishing the Oregon Lifespan Respite Care Program in 1997. Local Lifespan Respite Care Networks were established to help families and caregivers find quality respite care and related services in their local communities. The State legislature further strengthened support for the program in 2007.
Funding provided through the Department of Human Services has been for the administrative costs of start-up for the local partners. The Department has reached the goal of creating a local structure to serve all 36 counties; however, respite services have not been consistent for family caregivers in every county due to various systemic and funding reasons.
