| New WIC Food Package Interim Rule |

The Oregon WIC Program implemented new WIC food packages on August 1, 2009 based on an interim rule USDA/FNS issued on December 6, 2007. (View the WIC Food Package Interim Rule: PDF or text.)
This interim rule revises regulations to better align the WIC food packages with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and current infant feeding practice guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The new food package better promotes and supports breastfeeding, provides WIC participants with a wider variety of foods, and gives WIC State agencies greater flexibility to meet cultural food preferences.

States must implement certain parts of the rule, such as providing fresh fruits and vegetables. States can also decide among other optional foods based on considerations such as participant preference, availability and cost. The Oregon Food List, effective August 1, 2009, includes the new foods Oregon chose to approve at this time including fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, whole grains (100% whole wheat bread, corn tortillas and brown rice), salmon and infant foods
