Oregon Prepares

• The Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW), in conjunction with the Pacific Flyway Council, which represents all Western states and Alaska, is developing a surveillance plan for highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in Oregon. Final Oregon monitoring will compliment an overall flyway-monitoring program.

• The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) has a surveillance and response plan in place for high and low-path avian influenza in poultry.

• With the assistance of recently appropriated federal funding, ODA will be increasing levels of surveillance among high-risk, non-commercial flocks, non-commercial poultry marketing systems, and with upland game bird breeders.

• ODA is assisting Oregon commercial poultry producers on site-specific avian influenza response plans.

• ODA is sending educational materials on avian influenza to extension agents, feed stores and other venues to outreach to backyard poultry owners.

• State Public Health has developed guidelines to protect individuals conducting control activities in avian influenza affected poultry flocks.

• ODA and DHS public health have given joint presentations on avian influenza and its implications for the poultry industry and public health to veterinarians, county health departments and emergency planners.

• ODFW, ODA, DHS public health and partner agencies have formed an interagency workgroup to develop an interagency response plan to avian influenza, H5N1, in wild and domestic birds.

• ODFW, ODA and DHS public health have developed sick and dead bird reporting protocols to enhance surveillance.

• DHS public health has protocols for assessment and testing of suspect human cases of avian influenza.

• The Oregon State Public Health Laboratory has capability to test human specimens for H5N1 avian influenza.
