Since 1995, Safe Kids Oregon has been raising awareness about preventable childhood unintentional injuries and deaths by supporting public awareness campaigns, providing education and training, distributing safety items and educational materials, and supporting child safety policies and laws through its statewide Safe Kids network.
Community Involvement
Safe Kids Oregon is the State Office of the Safe Kids Worldwide the first and only national organization dedicated solely to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury – the number one killer of children ages 14 and under. More than 300 State and Local Safe Kids Coalitions in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico comprise the Campaign. Nine chapters and five local coalitions geographically represent Safe Kids Oregon, reaching approximately 85% of Oregon’s children under the age of 14. This network unites public and private organizations including:
Fire Service
|
Health and Safety Professionals
|
Emergency Responders
|
Parents and Caregivers
|
Law Enforcement
|
Hospitals & Corporations
|
Oregon’s network has been national recognized as a leader in the field of injury prevention. In 1998, Safe Kids Oregon won the “State Coalition of the Year” award from Safe Kids Worldwide. In 2005 & 2006, the state director was nominated as “Outstanding U.S. State Coordinator,” and in 2007, Safe Kids Oregon was a finalist for the “Outstanding Public Policy Award.”
However, in order to be truly effective, injury prevention needs the attention and effort of all Oregonians in order to eliminate needless deaths and disabilities to our children. Between 2003-2005, 196 Oregon children under the age of 14 were killed by preventable unintentional injuries and another 3700 were hospitalized. The Safe Kids Oregon network is constantly working to eliminate these preventable killers:
- Motor vehicle occupant crashes
- Suffocation/choking
- Pedestrian incidents
- Drowning
- Fire/burns/scalds
- Falls
- ATVs/Off-road vehicle crashes
- Bicycle crashes
- Poisonings
