Fatality Surveillance
Fatality Surveillance
What is a fatal work-related injury?
A fatal work-related injury is an injury that occurs while one performs their job and results in death. The Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is one data source that records work-related fatalities resulting from non-intentional injuries (homicides, suicides). They also record fatalities from motor vehicle crashes that occur during travel for work but not during a person’s commute to and from work.

Who conducts fatality surveillance?
The Oregon Occupational Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation Program (OR-FACE) conducts fatality surveillance. The OR-FACE program is a partnership between the Oregon Public Health Division (OPHD) at the Department of Human Services and the Center for Research on Occupational and Environmental Toxicology (CROET) at Oregon Health & Science University. The program office and personnel are located at CROET. This collaboration was built upon a previously established foundation of good working relationships between CROET and OPHD, and these relationships have been expanded through the OR-FACE program.

Fatality surveillance is one of three surveillance projects that Oregon receives support from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to conduct.
