Mercy Flights Explorer Advisor

As written by Ed Sutton, EMT-B
Young Women My name is Ed Sutton and I am a volunteer Explorer Advisor for Mercy Flights Ambulance in Medford. I use my EMT education to educate young men and women, ages 16-20 who are interested in medical careers.
Young Men

Explorers receive training and become certified as First Responders, gaining valuable experience riding along and assisting on both air and ground ambulances. The explorers provide basic assistance to EMT's on emergency calls, conduct public education, and provide medical coverage at scout camps and other scouting events. Explorers also help staff ambulances and first aid stations for a variety of public events, meeting weekly for training and activities.

There are also opportunities to observe medical care in trauma centers in Oregon and to ride along with EMS and Fire services beyond the Medford area. This summer, I took seven explorers to serve as medical staff at the Boy Scout National Jamboree near Washington D.C. We also observed in the trauma center at Washington Hospital Center, including the Neonatal unit, Labor & Delivery and Pathology. We observed many trauma surgeries including those related to gunshot and stabbing injuries. Some explorers also flew on Medstar Medical Helicopters.

Explorers in DC

These young people will never forget these experiences. It is very rewarding to help our youth by giving them the opportunity to explore career options available to them. Please feel free to contact me for more information about our program. These youth truly are the future of EMS.

Thanks,
Ed Sutton EMT-B
