Clinical Manager of Doernbecher Children's Hospital

Fred Neis, RN, MS, CEN, NREMT-P
Fred Neis After completing high school I joined a volunteer fire department and a multi-county ALS tiering unit, while attending college full time. After my sophomore year in college I took a summer and fall term to obtain my EMT-P training from the University of Iowa's EMS training program. After receiving my EMT-P certificate I continued to attend college full time and work for several different EMS and fire agencies.

I have been a Registered Nurse for 9 years now and have really enjoyed the diversity of training I received between the paramedic and nursing courses. Being a paramedic teaches you to be autonomous, and make decisions with often-limited information in a situation of chaos. It also provided me the opportunity to perform skills I would not otherwise be able to as a nurse. Nursing builds on that foundation with additional pathophysiology and many opportunities to see patients in the continuum of care and understand how EMS can impact an outcome. I enjoy the prehospital environment so much I have never been without a part time field position.

Team B

Between 2000 and 2002 I was the EMS for Children Coordinator for Oregon. Being both a paramedic and RN gave me a broader understanding of the system issues facing pediatric emergency medical care. This position gave me the opportunity to change the statewide pediatric care system and also travel all around the state and country.

I am currently the Clinical Manager of the ED at OHSU/Doernbecher Children's Hospital. I also continue to teach EMS and emergency care providers. AMR has allowed me the opportunity to work part time in Clackamas and Multnomah Counties and last year I became a member of the Oregon Disaster Medical Assistance Team.
