Improving Asthma Care in Oregon Workgroup (concluded)

One of the major objectives of the Oregon Asthma Program was to develop an Oregon-specific, population-based asthma guide based on the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute's Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma. To accomplish this task, the Improving Asthma Care in Oregon Workgroup was established and consisted of clinicians, health systems administrators, pharmacists, quality auditors, community organizations, researchers, and people with asthma.

The Guide to Improving Asthma Care in Oregon was developed through a consensus process and includes population-based goals and measurements.

This guide will help promote consistent treatment of people with asthma throughout Oregon in a manner that is possible in a primary care setting. Some issues the Improving Asthma Care in Oregon Workgroup considered while developing the Guide to Improving Asthma Care in Oregon were:

  • What are the important things to do for asthma care in Oregon?
  • Why are these things important? What happens if we don't do them?
  • What is the supporting evidence?
  • How will we know if the guidelines have been applied or not?
  • What should we expect as an outcome if the guidelines have been applied?
  • How will we observe the outcomes?
