Flu's in Oregon; here's what you can do about it
Oregon's influenza season is already underway. To protect yourself and avoid
spreading the flu to others, these tips are offered by public health experts
in the Oregon Department of Human Services.
- Get a flu shot. These are often provided at work sites, doctors' offices,
county health departments and other public places. For a location in your
area call 1-800-SAFENET.
- Wash your hands frequently to get rid of germs you have picked up from other
people, contaminated surfaces or other sources.
- Getting vaccinated also protects others who are vulnerable for complications
of influenza: Visiting Grandma or Grandpa over the holiday? Plan on seeing
Aunt Bessie in the nursing home? Is there an infant in your household who
is under 6 months? Get a flu shot!
- Always cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough to avoid spreading germs.
- If you do become ill, spare your co-workers from being exposed to sickness.
Stay home.
- Don't automatically expect your doctor to prescribe antibiotics. Antivirals
may be prescribed for flu and antibiotics for associated bacterial infections.
You may be surprised to know that influenza and pneumonia (a complication of
the flu) are now the eighth leading cause of death among Oregonians overall
and the seventh leading cause of death for those age 65 or older. Influenza
and pneumonia kill 36,000 Americans every year. More
information about influenza can be found on the Web.
