AmeriCorps HOPE
What do AmeriCorps HOPE members do?
There are six specific grant objectives, or “Performance Measures ”, in the federal AmeriCorps HOPE grant. All host sites and AmeriCorps HOPE members are expected to work toward achieving these performance measures.
Because service plans vary from one host site to another, activities that each AmeriCorps HOPE member perform will vary somewhat. But all activities on one of the performance levels.
Examples of AmeriCorps serive include:
- Delivering the message to young people to postpone sexual involvement through courses such as STARS (Students Today Aren’t Ready for Sex)
- Delivering specific curriculums dealing with sexuality, teen issues, health risks, teen pregnancy, contraception, and related risk behaviors
- Cross-age mentoring programs
- Group discussions, classes, and workshops dealing with self esteem, making personal choices, building life skills, resiliency
- Teen parent programs teaching parenting skills, independent living skills to teen parents, and avoiding second teen pregnancy
- After school and summer recreational healthy activities for positive youth development
- Community outreach and capacity building for sustainability of local teen pregnancy prevention programs through volunteerism
- Public information campaigns about teen pregnancy, alcohol/drug use, other risks behaviors, prevention, domestic and sexual violence through newspapers, TV, radio, advertising, special events
- Providing coordination of services to people affected by violence or abuse
- Leading support groups
- Mentoring
What benefits do AmeriCorps HOPE members receive?
- Earning an educational award of $4,725 after an 11 month term of service, which can be used to pay off existing student loans, or pay for future college or vocational school expenses
- A living allowance of $11,400 during your 11 month term of full-time service
- Forbearance on payments of existing student loans during your term of service
- All interest on existing student loans which accrues during service is paid upon completion
- Medical insurance coverage is provided for Members
- Child care supplement is paid for those who qualify
- An AmeriCorps Member may serve up to two terms of service

Joining AmeriCorps HOPE
We are seeking dedicated and dependable men and women, who enjoy working with youth and families and care about their future success. Minimum age 18; no maximum age. A minimum high school diploma or GED is required; some college or a bachelor’s degree is desirable. Must be U.S. citizen or legal status.
New AmeriCorps members will become part of Oregon’s campaign to increase knowledge about the risks of early sexual involvement, to prevent teen pregnancies, and to increase social and communication skills and resiliency among our youth.
Our next term begins September 1, 2008 with a mandatory 3-day orientation/training camp during September. Criminal background checks must be completed before acceptance. We’re accepting applications now for 17 full-time positions in Oregon, including one Team Leader.

Is housing available?
Housing is not offered through AmeriCorps HOPE. No funding is available for relocation costs. However, once you have been selected, your site supervisor may be able to assist you in finding affordable housing in the community where you will be serving.
How do I apply?
To join AmeriCorps HOPE as a full-time AmeriCorps member for the 9/1/2008 through 7/31/2009 term of service, visit the AmeriCorps Web site and apply online. If you are unable to submit your AmeriCorps application online, then download the form, complete it by hand, and mail the application with two reference forms to Tina McCollum.

See the host site list and a brief description of each member's major service plan. Then contact the site supervisor directly at each host site location for which you would like to be considered to let them know you are interested in that site.

- Select all members by August 8, 2008
- Notify all members of selection by August 22, 2008
- Start term of service on September 1, 2008
- Start Orientation and training week of Sept. 2 or 8, 2008
Enrollment in AmeriCorps HOPE is contingent upon satisfactory background check, references, and criminal history record.
